Giveaway!

To celebrate the fact that my cookbooks shipped yesterday ... I'm having a giveaway! I'm very excited about the cookbook - It's published through a service that produces church or school cookbooks. Titled "Barefoot In The Kitchen", it's a softcover, coil-bound book that contains 134 recipes. To order one, you can email me by clicking the "Email Me" envelope button on the right-hand side of the blog. The books are $10, plus $2.95 for shipping if necessary, cash or check. You can order anytime! In a few days, after I receive the books, I'll share a link with you where it will be available to order on-line, too.

Now, on to the free stuff!

The first item will be a handmade apron from my best friend of more than (gulp!) 20 years! She's an accomplished seamstress with a terrific sense of style. Here are some pictures of an apron she made as a gift for me, though you’ll get to choose your own fabric from the options in the final picture.

I will also draw a second name and that person will win a copy of my cookbook!

All you have to do to enter the drawing is comment at the end of this post with your answer to this question:

What is the strangest food you love?

Can you not get enough of it or is it a once-in-a-while special treat? Is it a weird combination of two ordinary foods? Are you the only person you know who loves it? I will go ahead and confess that one of mine is ... Corned beef hash. Yes, the stuff in a can, with little diced potatoes. I only buy it once in a blue moon because I'm the only one in the family who eats it! I love it mixed with rice and cheddar cheese. Please don't hate me now.

I’ll choose a winner through the highly scientific process of writing all the names down and drawing two from a hat. You may only enter once, and the giveaway ends Tuesday, June 28 at 6:00 p.m.! Winners will be announced by Wednesday morning.

  2. So it's not that "strange"... but I love Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls! They are my biggest guilty pleasure, I usually try to eat healthier/less processed food. haha

  3. Well, I am not one for eating strange foods, because I am very picky; however, when my daughter was very young, she liked to experiment with food (even then) and she used to take plain Dorito chips and spread peanut butter and sprinkle sugar on them. Believe it or not they were really pretty good.

  8. My hubby likes a weird combo I made up one evening. I make a little tent out of aluminum foil and grill a whole onion, cut in quarters, with a beef bouillon cube and some hot sauce in it. After it cooks a while, I open it up and let them cook a little more. Tasty.

  11. Totally forgot to answer the question...crushed up saltines mixed with homemade ranch dressing. Crazy but yummy!

  12. I really like cheesy tuna grits with salt and pepper - kind of like shrimp with cheese grits but not quite so sofisticated, I'm afraid! I only like the white albacore tuna with it, though... the other tuna is not so good in it!

  13. A Bacon Sundae from Denny's It had vanilla ice cream, maple syrup, and peices of bacon crumbled on top in it; is weird but it was pretty good

  14. I think growing up southern, nothing seems truly weird, if it can be created in my kitchen..... but.... now living on Spain I think my obsession with Spanish olives is weird... I didn't even like olives before I left the US!!!
xoxoxoxo.... We're so proud of you Jen!! Stacy Jo

  15. I like chicken boullion in my cheese grits. That's as odd as I go. Although, when Grace was on the way, I wanted to eat french fried onions with cream of mushroom soup as a dip.

    Congrats on the cookbook!

  17. I love to eat tuna right out of the can! It really grosses my husband out; he says it reminds him of cat food and stinks up the whole house. So, needless to say, I try to only eat it when he is away at work! Our oldest son loves it, too and will often pop open a can for a snack. :)

  18. Ooops, by the way, that last anonymous post about tuna in a can was from me, Tammy Carpenter. :) (Pregnancy brain..forgot to mention my name!)

  19. Congrats on the cookbook! I had no idea until now but I'm tickled absolutely pink for you!

My strangest food? Scrambled eggs and ketchup over grits. Believe it or not, if you let the eggs get cold before piling them on the hot grits they'll taste like shrimp. My brother discovered this tiny factoid at the tender age of 4 and he and I have been hooked ever since.

I still remember all of you kids experimenting with foods in my kitchen. Why didn't any of you ever save something for me to try? *sigh*

  20. This is Kim, your favorite, picky, college kid. As a result of said pickiness I don't really eat strange food. However, when I was a kid I used to eat corn with ketchup on it. I would never eat that now, but it definitely used to be one of my favorite things to eat.

  21. Mine is cream of mushroom sour mixed with a can of drained tuna. Heat it a little on the stove and serve over toast and its yummy for lunch. My mom fed us this as kids and I think its great. Matthew thinks its about the worst food ever so its def not for everyone. ~Allison Hollimon

  23. Fortunately or unfortunately I do not necessarily eat new or strange foods. But I do remember trying octopus one time when I was out to dinner with my family. My father ordered it and I had a taste.

  24. This is Chrissy, and the strangest but most wonderful thing that I love is a grilled PB&J. Just make a regular PB&J and grill with butter. The peanut butter gets all melty and gooey. Sooo good especially with a tall glass of ice cold milk! Way to go on your cookbook Jeni. I'm sure it will be a hit.

  25. BTW, strawberry jelly is the only way to go!

  26. I like peanut butter mixed with pancake syrup and spread on Ritz crackers. Yum!

  27. Oh my goodness... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give it to me! :)

Strangest food that I love... I am ashamed to say that I have a slight addiction to $1 frozen pizzas. I recognize they are disgusting - yet I still adore them! Totinos are my fav...

  31. I like Ruffles plain potato chips dipped in low-fat cottage cheese..yummy! My mom got me hooked on it, and I get really strange faces when I have this strange combo.

  32. I like the combination of sweet and salty, so I'll sit down with my chips and salsa and finish it off with a brownie! And yes, that does replace a meal for me. :)

  33. I never thought of it as odd growing up, but as an adult, I have been informed that Mayo Banana Sandwiches are very odd. They are just what they sound like: bananas sliced longways on white bread smeared with mayonnaise. It is my true "comfort food" when I need to remember simpler times in life. -Erin Gaston, another longtime friend of the fabulous Leah! :-)
